Does anyone know how I can export a Gedcom file? Tribalpages explains how to import a file or export a file from another Ancestry site to Tribalpages but not how to export my Tribapages as a gedcom to another site. ie Ancestry? Thank you-Dawn

I've seen these steps, but have a further question. When I export a Gedcom from here to my computer and open it, it automatically opens in MyHeritage however; I recently (today) purchased the upgrade version of RootsMagic and would like to use that software. How do I do that? Additionally, way back when I sued Family Tree Maker software that was on my computer, not the webbase newer versions; I could work on my computer and every few weeks make a new Gedcom on my computer from Family Tree Maker to upload here on Tribal Pages. Never had a problem with that, it would add whatever was new. Several years ago when I did that to half my husband's tree, it wiped out all of his mothers side, which I didn't know until it was too late. I'm trying to determine if my trees here on Tribal match the ones on Heritage. I don't remember when I started with Heritage, but know I've had Tribal longer.

How often do you recommend downloading your GEDCOM? I see the process, but wonder how to select the software you want to open it? I had Family Tree Maker back in the day when the software was on your computer, which I loved. Going back and forth between it and here was a breeze. Then they changed their stuff to an online vs on your computer. And I basically stopped doing genealogy. Recently I've loaded RootMagic which is suppose to be very much like the older Family Tree Maker. However, prior to that I had My Heritage. I don't like using My Heritage, in that the free version limits what you can do. I keep getting message I've exceeded the limits of names etc. But, I've been hesitant to upgrade due to the cost and not being sure if I would like it anybetter. When I try to open a GEDCOM from here it automatically opens up in My Heritage instead of RootsMagic. Is there a way to change that?

create a back up of your Tribal Pages site and then download it to your computer. The file can then be used as a gedcom.

I don't think it can do that because it would have to take all the info from the web pages and convert it back into a GEDCOM. I know I wouldn't want to do that with mine because when I upload a GEDCOM from my Legacy program, some various, additional info for individuals may be missing and any census after the first one won't be listed at TribalPages, so the other censuses wouldn't be in the downloaded GEDCOM and they would be lost. I may have four censuses for someone in my Legacy program but at TribalPages, only the first one will show up. I'm not sure what other info could be missing. You want to build your tree with a genealogy program and upload GEDCOMs here. I wouldn't build a tree with the website because you won't be able to export the info to another site or program if you ever want to.
